Sleep Center

Cabinet Peaks' Sleep Center is a AASM accredited sleep-related, breathing disorder laboratory.

It is estimated that 40 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders, and an additional 20-30 million are affected by intermittent sleep-related problems. What is shocking is that an overwhelming majority of sleep disorders remain undiagnosed and untreated.

An occasional bad night's sleep is no cause for concerns, but a continued sleep disorder can affect your health and the quality of your waking hours. There are more than 84 disorders related to sleep that can lead to a lower quality of life and diminished health. Here are some of the more common sleep disorders.

Sleep Disorders: What are they and what are their symptoms?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Breathing pauses from a few seconds to a minute or more throughout the night. Loud snoring, daytime sleepiness, and even high blood pressure, heart failure, and stroke are associated with this disorder.

Narcolepsy:
Symptoms can include excessive daytime sleepiness, uncontrollable daytime sleep attacks, sudden loss of muscle tone, vivid hallucinations during sleep onset, and sleep paralysis.
Self evaluation for daytime sleepiness:
Epworth Sleepiness Scale (PDF)

Insomnia:
Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. This disorder effects one in three American adults.

Restless Legs Syndrome:
An unpleasant creeping or crawling sensation in the legs when awake and at rest. The arms may also be affected by this disorder.

Periodic Limb Movements:
Involuntary movement of the legs occurring while asleep. The person is usually unaware of the nighttime movements and may complain of restless sleep or excessive daytime sleepiness.

Parasomnias:
Sleep walking, sleep talking, teeth grinding, sleep terrors, rhythmic-movement disorder (head banging, head rolling, or body rocking) occurring mainly in young children, and REM sleep behavior disorder (acting out of dreams).
